Graduate Choices

Choosing a graduate program can be a very difficult task as school leavers do not have a lot of life experience when choosing a career path.

Spending time with students helping them decide upon an appropriate career before embarking on university studies should be an essential part of any curriculum. If you have not developed a strong interest in a particular area, often the choice of courses depends on what your friends are doing or what a teacher might have said to you or picking course that are dictated by your marks rather than an area of interest. Unfortunately, many teachers themselves do not have the necessary tools to advise students on possible career paths.

If you think that your school is lacking in helping you decide upon your career, you should seek out a specialist career advisor who has experience with dealing with secondary school students on a regular basis. Failing that, there are a lot of online career that can help you narrow down a field of interest based on your personality traits and current interests. Such tools have proved to be very good at providing career advice.  For example, if you are strong in mathematics or accounting, than a career in economics or finance might be appropriate. Such grounding could lead to a career in financial advising, stock broker, forex trading or a plethora of related careers. If you are more of an artistic type, then there are various arts degrees that you can choose from.

Spending a little time during the last 2 years of your secondary schooling deciding what area of interest you are going to pursue at University is a great investment into your future and should be encouraged by parents and teachers alike.
